AP® Physics 1

The deep conceptual understanding required for AP Physics 1 challenges both students and instructors. This workshop will strengthen your understanding of the content of AP Physics 1, familiarize you with the available resources, and arm you with research-based strategies for making the most of your class time.

Participants should bring the following:

  • The textbook you will use in class
  • A lab, demonstration, or teaching tip to share!

Course Outline (Subject to Change):

Topics will include the following:

  • Content: what to teach and what can be left out
  • Writing a syllabus and planning a calendar for the year
  • Thinking conceptually to solve problems efficiently
  • Techniques from Physics Education Research
  • Effective use of released exams
  • How to structure your classroom tests to effectively prepare students for the AP exam
  • Labs using technology and on a budget
  • Guided inquiry labs
  • Structuring homework/classwork for maximum learning and minimum grading

Instructor

Chris Bruhn Chris was an aerospace engineer with Bell Helicopter before becoming a teacher. He taught 10 years as a physics teacher at L.D. Bell High School in Hurst, TX, where he was teacher of the year, and 10 more as Lead AP Physics Teacher for Dallas ISD, where he was the recipient of the O’Donnell Texas AP Teacher Award. Before joining Haltom High School, Chris was as a Regional Director at the National Math and Science Initiative. Chris is the author of two McGraw Hill books: "5 Steps to a 5 - AP Physics 2" and “500 AP Physics 2 Questions to know by test day”.
